Gastroprokinetic

Related to metoclopramide, but does not cross the blood-brain barrier or have antidopaminergic effects. Therefore, it does not have antiemetic action. More potent and has broader prokinetic activity than metoclopramide.

Indications:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, megaesophagus chronic constipation in cats with megacolon, hairballs in cats.

Precautions:

Should not be used when increased GI motility may be harmful (mechanical obstruction, impaction, potential perforation or GI hemorrhage).

The dose of cisapride should be reduced in animals with decreased liver function. Elimination of cisapride is not significantly influenced by decreased renal function.

Cisapride is excreted in milk in lactating animals.
